These units will be geared to provide Savings and other Deposit Products, Cheque Deposits, Foreign Currency Encashment and Deposits, Cashiers Orders, Acceptance of Loan Applications, Vardhana Junior Accounts Openings and Acceptance of Deposits and a host of other services. Plans are also underway to introduce Micro Financing activities as well.
The Hon. Minister also mentioned that this initiative to encourage and accommodate commercial banking services in its Sri Lanka Postal units in the form of public, private partnership was initiated with the main intention of adding income generating capacity to SL Post, thereby making use of its idle resources. This would then contribute to the effort of reducing the massive deficit faced by SL Post at present (over Rs.3,000mn annually) – which is a massive strain on the Government budget.
